Course Unit Description
The course is based on the principle that learning is a lifelong and continuous process and teachers and learners in the field. The course promotes the growth in human potential and development of teachers. It is aimed at promoting positive attitudes in teacher trainees towards continuous professional development.
Course Objectives
The course should be able to lead students to be able to:
- Define the concept of a profession and professionalism in teaching
- Explain the role of teachers as facilitators and learners
- Demonstrate high levels of professionalism
- Identify the need for staff development
- Discuss the challenges to professional development in modern times
- Design profession development plans to improve the quality of teaching and learning
- Trace the origin of supervision and inspection in Uganda’s education system
- Describe the qualities of a good Inspector/supervisor
- Distinguish between traditional and modern school supervision in Uganda’s education system
Learning outcomes
Graduates who took this course shall be able to:
- Examine and critique various professional practices for purposes of improvement
- Plan their own professional growth and development
- Uphold the teachers’ code of conduct at all times
- Advocate and promote the teaching profession
- Change the image of the teaching profession for the better
