Course Unit Description

The course deals with a critical examination of major concepts, theories, and gender issues in environment and natural resource management. Practical methods, tools and techniques in integrating gender analysis in natural resource management are examined using actual case studies and experiences in various bio-physical, geographic, international, and cross-cultural contexts. The sustainable Development Goal Number 5 aims at “Promoting gender equality and empowering women”. Gender inequality generally slows economic growth, increases difficulty in overcoming poverty. The course brings into focus various gender issues with a view to defining the concepts and creating an understanding of how gender issues are important in various development disciplines and Natural resources management in particular. 

Course Objectives
At the end of this course, the student will be:

  • Equipped with key gender concepts and fundamental theoretical issues in Natural resources management 
  • able to relate arguments surrounding current debates on gender roles and Natural Resource Management 
  • Familiar with some of the various critical approaches that inform gender and environment studies.
  • Able to critically assess underlying assumptions of contemporary theory and discourse on the    relationship between gender, and natural resources and sustainability.
  • Able to discuss gender, natural resources and activism among people with diverse backgrounds and disciplines.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this course, the student should demonstrate capacity to:

  • Apply the various gender concepts and fundamental theories to sustainable management of natural resources management.
  • Identify and relate the different gender roles to various activities in management of   natural resources. 
  • Articulate the rationale and practical significance of integrating gender analysis in sustainable natural resource management.
  • Articulate the impact of gender on natural resource use and development. 
  • Conduct gender analysis in all aspects of natural resources management.
