MID8206 Management of Irrigation and Drainage Systems
Course Unit Description
The course covers management of irrigation systems and related watersheds, overview of national and international water and watershed policies, laws, and community-based bye-laws and regulations and concerned institutions. The course also covers irrigation and drainage systems structures and assets management, repairs and maintenance.
Course Objectives
- To identify water delivery arrangements including suitable flow control amenable to the scheme objectives.
- To explain different levels of water delivery service and associated costs
- To explain procedures to draw up service agreements considering cost recovery and accountability.
- To explain procedures for designing asset management programs and action plans for implementation; and devising monitoring, evaluation and benchmarking systems for assessing system performance.
- To give students insight to the laws, legislations and traditions pertaining to the development and use of water resources for agriculture.
- To familiarize students with the latest insights and concepts in integrated water management that are under debate at national, regional and international fora.
- To give students an insight into the need and format of local and international laws (cultural/traditions regulations, common laws and legislation) pertaining to the development and use of water resources.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, the students are able to:
- Identify water delivery arrangements including suitable flow control amenable to the scheme objectives.
- Conceptualize legislative, organizational and financial attributes of irrigation service delivery.
- Comprehend different levels of water delivery service and associated costs and be able to draw up service agreements considering cost recovery and accountability.
- Design asset management programs and action plans for implementation; and devise monitoring, evaluation and benchmarking systems for assessing system performance.
- Analyze existing local, regional and international policies and laws governing irrigation and watershed management.
- To formulate policy objectives for irrigation development and management.
